Camp Norland — Our Story

Camp Norland Campers in the 80's

Camp Norland has been a special place on the shores of Deer Lake for more than 60 years. What began as a generous gift of land in 1962 has grown into a vibrant retreat, camp, and community hub that draws people from across Ontario. It all started with a vision from the Northern Association of Baptist Churches and the Ackerland family, who donated the original property so others could enjoy the beauty and peace of Deer Lake.

In 1992, the year Camp Norland became incorporated, we also opened up the three-story Retreat Centre, which allowed for an extended camping and retreat season. This was achieved through the help of an army of volunteers from all over the north. The retreat centre is the focal point for all the summer camp activities.

Camp Norland — Our Growth

Camp Norland's waterfront area

For decades, Kipling Baptist Church, neighbouring communities, volunteers, and visitors have shaped Norland into much more than a campground — it’s a place for spiritual growth, friendships, leadership, and adventure.

In 2014, Camp Norland began a partnership with Coldwater Canada, a wilderness camping ministry that needed a base in northern Ontario. This has continued up to now and provides a new avenue for reaching out with the word of God. It is has been a rewarding partnership.

Over the years, Camp Norland has become a place for camps, retreats, and gatherings that bring people together in faith and community.

Today, it also serves as a base camp for Coldwater Canada, supporting wilderness trips and outdoor programs for people of all ages.
